Fatal Car Crash Demonstration
Sanford, Maine – Sanford High School students, in partnership with Liberty Mutual, are sending a powerful message to their classmates and community in preparation of the May 15, 2010 prom- Drinking and Driving is a deadly combination, especially during prom season.
To heighten awareness of this ever-present threat in Sanford, and throughout the country, Liberty Mutual Group and local Emergency Responders are providing the High School with a crashed vehicle for a safety demonstration for juniors and seniors at the high school on Thursday May 13, 2010 beginning at 8:00am.
The program will feature a “Zero Tolerance Law” discussion and a “jaws of life” demonstration by the Sanford Fire Department, as well as a mock accident and arrest featuring a student volunteering as a “drunk” driver conducted by the Sanford Police Department.
“Motor vehicle crashes are the number-one killer of teens in America and in 2009 took the lives of 43 young drivers in Maine.” said Jason Tremblay, Liberty Mutual’s sales representative in Kennebunk, ME. “These cars remind all of us that drinking and driving is unacceptable, and that one poor decision can instantly make a happy prom a tragic one.”
Nearly 10,000 young drivers in the U.S. ages 15-20 were involved in fatal crashes in 2009, according to the latest available statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Of those who died in these crashes, 25 percent were intoxicated.
This demonstration is done in part by the Sanford School Department; Partners for Healthier Communities, a program of Goodall Hospital; Sanford Police Department; Sanford Fire Department; and Liberty Mutual.
Let’s work together to make the 2010 prom season a safe one!
