Goodall’s First Biggest Loser Challenge A Losing Success!
Goodall Hospital is proud to announce the completion of their first ever Biggest Loser Challenge. This challenge was an initiative of the hospital’s Wellness Committee. Over the past year the Committee has focused its educational sessions and program offerings on the top six health conditions of our employees and their dependents (enrolled in Goodall offered insurance plan), physical activity, weight management, and tobacco cessation.
Goodall’s Biggest Loser Challenge reached many facets of the Committee’s focus including physical activity, weight management and all of the six health conditions. This program did have some guidelines which included: participants had to be a hospital provider, employee or volunteer; signing of a contract by all participants that they understood the Challenge rules; and teams were to be formed with at least five (5) and no more than 12 members – one (1) of which needed to be identified as the Team Captain.
The Team Captain was responsible for disseminating the weekly motivational and exercise/nutrition tips sent out by Committee member Anne L’Heureux, Goodall’s Director of Food Services and a certified personal trainer who is in her last stages of receiving her degree in Nutrition and collecting their team members’ weights and submitting to the Challenge Coordinator, Naomi Erwin, by the stated day and time. If a team did not have all members’ weights submitted by the weigh-in deadline, that whole team was disqualified.
The Challenge was done over a 12-week time period and consisted of four (4) weigh-ins (done every three (3) weeks) in addition to participants starting weights being submitted. Results were based off the percent of weight lost rather than the actual pounds lost so that all participants and their teams were on the same playing field. After each weigh-in the team standings were released organization wide and leader board posters were placed in various locations for all to see.
In total there were 125 participants who made up 14 teams. The winning team, lead by Kathy Akerman, had six (6) members, all from Goodall’s Center for Women’s Health, and lost a combined total of 99.6 pounds – an 8.64% weight loss! Members of the winning team received $50 gift cards to a local sporting goods store.
In addition, the Committee awarded Goodall’s Biggest Individual Loser, a member of the Case Management Department who lost over 30 pounds, with a $150 gift card. Overall, the 125 participants lost a combined total of 809 pounds! Averaging out to over 55 pounds lost per team in 12 weeks!
Goodall’s Wellness Committee and administration were thrilled with the results and the Committee plans to run the Challenge again! Congratulations to all participants for their deserved accomplishments!
