Local Fifth Grade Students Take Part in Service Learning
In the fall of 2010, Goodall Hospital began working with the Sanford School Department’s Service Learning Coordinator, Jed Bloom. Service Learning is a way to demonstrate to students how the knowledge and skills they are acquiring in school are utilized in the ‘real’ world and work force.
Currently, the health curriculum for fifth grade students in Sanford includes a section on nutrition. To start, fifth grade students submitted questions regarding nutrition to Goodall Hospital’s Food Service Director, Anne L’Heureux and Medical Nutrition Director, Kelly Falone. Anne and Kelly then demonstrated the answers via video for the students. The students were then able to view the video in their classroom.
The next phase of the project required the students to develop a lunch menu to be served at Hillcrest Gardens, Goodall’s assisted living facility located on the hospital campus. The menu was then submitted to Anne and approved to serve.
On Tuesday, May 17 the students made the short trip to Goodall Hospital where they toured the food service department and were able to help prepare, transport and serve the meal to the residents of Hillcrest Gardens. Goodall Hospital thanks the students and their advisors for a job well done.
