Life With Diabetes Can Be Easier
There is a bit of a misconception that those who have diabetes must eliminate all their favorite foods from their eating plans and sustain themselves in a sugarfree world. Those who enroll in Goodall Hospital’s Outsmarting Diabetes program learn this is simply not true. Armed with new knowledge provided by an experienced, dynamic team, our participants have all the tools they will need to carry out a lifetime plan to control this disease.
Outsmarting Diabetes is led by a registered dietitian. It also features presentations by a pharmacist, a registered nurse and a social worker. Participants receive information about diabetes and other lifestyle issues that impact eating habits. Stress management, how to monitor blood sugars and the importance of exercise are also covered during the program.
Participants enjoy private sessions with a registered dietitian to begin the program and their progress is closely followed to ensure that they remain on the right track.
Outsmarting Diabetes is recognized and approved by the American Diabetes Association.
The Skill Set
Those who complete the Outsmarting Diabetes program will understand how to control blood glucose levels while:
Enjoying normal food
Translating/understanding blood glucose numbers
The Latest Research Proves It Works
The instructors of Outsmarting Diabetes consistently review and assess the program’s success. Though the reduction of A1C (blood glucose) levels depends largely on the patient’s ability to alter lifestyles, Outsmarting Diabetes program attendees have experienced a reduction in A1C levels.
In the most recent survey, on average, A1C levels dropped out of unacceptable range into the acceptable range, falling nearly 1.5 points per participant. In addition to this success, participants also established goals for positive changes in lifestyles. These goals included losing weight, quitting smoking, planning meals and staying off diabetes medications.
At their one-year follow up, 97 percent of goals were achieved and just 3 percent were not realized.
