Let’s Go 5210 at Sanford Headstart
Thanks to support from the local Healthy Maine Partnership, Partners for Healthier Communities at Goodall Hospital, Ms. Hersom’s Sanford Head Start 3 classroom will be much more active over the upcoming rainy season. As a 5-2-1-0 Let’s Go site, Sanford Head Start is committed to increasing the amount of physical activity students get throughout the school day, regardless of weather.
5-2-1-0 Let’s Go! uses a multi-sector approach to reach youth and families where they live, study, work, and play to reinforce the importance of healthy eating and physical activity. The program is based on the premise that if families are exposed to health promotion messages through several settings, and if those settings have policies and environments that support healthy choices, they will be more likely to adopt or maintain the behaviors in their daily lives.
The Let’s Go! program centers on the use of the common message of “5-2-1-0”. Five or more fruits and vegetables a day; two hours or less of recreational screen time (keep the tv/computer out of the bedroom, and no screen time for children under the age of 2.); one hour or more of physical activity; and zero sugary drinks; encourage more water and low fat milk.
As the local 5-2-1-0 Let’s Go! contact, Partners for Healthier Communities is working with schools, childcare sites, healthcare, afterschool programs, and community organizations to develop policies and environmental changes to support the 5-2-1-0 message. If you are interested in hearing how your site can become part of this movement, please contact Sarah Roberts, Healthy Maine Partnership Director, at 490-7033 ext. 309 or via email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
